The House of sustainability
On 24 September 2023, based on a series of ideas presented and discussed with the local communities, the House of the Estrela Garden (Casa do Jardim da Estrela) opened its doors with the mission of promoting access to culture, environmental education, knowledge, and training for sustainability. It fits in with the Lisbon City Council's commitment to culture and the environment, as part of the network Um Teatro em Cada Bairro (A Theatre in Every Neighbourhood).
The iconic white chalet at the Estrela Garden, inaugurated in 1882 as the first public kindergarten in Portugal and a model of educational vision through contact with nature, is being restored to the public after extensive renovation work.
This cultural centre, open to the city, artists and locals, offers a library service with a curated selection of books for all ages on sustainability and ecology, and houses a research centre dedicated to historical gardens.
From Tuesday to Saturday, the House welcomes everyone with a vibrant and inclusive free programme of workshops, shows, concerts, exhibitions, book launches, training sessions and receptions.
