Who we are

Spaces open to all, with an active role in democratising access to culture and knowledge, and in fostering creativity, participation, and critical thinking, we are currently 17 libraries located in different areas of the city and 1 Itinerant Library.

We promote reading and literacy, but also citizenship, diversity, inclusion, artistic sensitivity and the preservation of memory and heritage.

We work closely with local communities on a daily basis, giving them an active role in the day-to-day life and activities of the libraries.

In addition to the free loan of books and other publications and access to audiovisual content and technological media, our services include workshops, meetings, conferences, exhibitions, music, and theatre performances.

We want to be cultural equipments that are close to people, open, accessible, and experienced by all. Spaces of and for people, at the service of each and every one of them.

At the Lisbon Libraries Network, we firmly believe in the freedoms of access to information and expression, as defined in the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. For this reason, we reject all threats to intellectual freedom, believing that a diversity of opinions enriches individuals and communities, fostering dialogue and mutual respect.
We are therefore committed to ensuring that everyone has access to a wide range of services in a safe environment where knowledge can be explored and human diversity celebrated, without restrictions on intellectual freedom and freedom of expression.
We embrace and incorporate freedom and human rights as fundamental pillars into all our values and actions.

Come and visit the Lisbon Libraries: it’s a privilege for us to count on you.
